My biostation Journey into Wellbeing

I turn 50 this year. This is the age when you aren’t really young, but you’re not quite old either; a pivotal time to address your overall wellbeing and determine how your ensuring years will unfold. It’s been a  few years, six to be exact, since taking a thorough look at my health via blood work, BMI and general check-up.  Sometimes you don’t want to know the truth….

I chose the biostation to join me on this journey of discovery. The biostation is in Delray Beach and having seen their ads for some time decided to jump in and see what they offered.

From their website:

“At the biostation, our mission is to redefine healthcare at every touchpoint. From our state of the art medical facility, to advanced diagnostic testing, to our world-class medical team led by two full time doctors, you can be confident that patient care, success, safety and satisfaction are our top priorities.”

Step 1:  Start with the facts

The first step they offer is to have a full blood panel run to determine your overall condition for heart, hormones, vitamin levels, cholesterol and much more.  I like this because it allows me to understand what is going on inside, before making assumptions based on my symptoms.

I learned that the initial blood work is covered by many insurance programs which is good, because to be thorough, it can often run about $1500. As of this writing, if you do not have insurance coverage, at the most you will pay $399 for your initial panel, which includes you doctor session.  Amazing!  A patient advocate was assigned to me personally and she has become my main guide through this health journey. The first appointment was easy in that I simply stopped in and had blood drawn.  I was in and out in ten minutes.

Step 2:  Assessing the Results

In today’s busy world, it is a known fact that most physicians will give you about 5-10 minutes of their time when assessing what brought you in.  They prescribe you something and send you on your way.  I was attracted to the biostation because they promoted the fact that early on you would have an extensive session with your physician.   I like to ask lots of questions…. as a health explorer, it is my job.

Let’s start with the good news

I arrived very proud of the fact that I wasn’t taking any medications. Yay me!!  I met with the Doctor and we began to go through my blood work.  According to my results overall, my cardiovascular health is in good shape and my hormones are normal for “my age” but showing signs of getting wonky, which will require tweaking. My thyroid is OK and my cortisol levels are showing as normal.

I hadn’t weighed myself in about 18 months and knowing I’d had a pretty rough 2016, I was willing to cut myself some slack.  I went in assuming I’d gained around 5 pounds….try 14.  I had an instantaneous “come to Jesus meeting” and in that meeting Jesus said…”Damn girl you tubby.”  I looked at him and said…”I thought you were supposed to be nice.  But he was right….According to my labs, I’m an overweight, anemic, vitamin deficient, pre diabetic with high LDL cholesterol and a testosterone deficiency.  Oh shit!  Wait, what?  I need Testosterone?? Also, there’s a good chance I have a leaky gut which is wreaking all sorts of havoc.

What does this mean Doctor?  This means that yes, you are 50 and if you do not take proactive steps to strategically prevent disease, then aging will prevail and you will get sick.  These things are not necessarily abnormal for someone of my age, but if not addressed I am on a shaky path.

I have to admit…I don’t feel horrible, but I don’t feel great either.  I’m ready to take action.
